The SDF Success Story

In October 2006, SDF patented the first paper-based, sustainable and recyclable strapping product with a goal to replace wire and plastic strapping in the pulp and packaging industry.

Our Approach Includes:

  • Engineer paper strap to work with existing plastic strapping equipment.

  • Design strap to compete with performance & cost of plastic strapping as a viable, environmentally responsible alternative.

  • Increase awareness of our paper strap as a more sustainable option to plastic strapping and film wrap in many applications.

  • Promote company wide recycling & sustainable business practices such as reviewing our manufacturing process, environmental impact and carbon footprint. Currently researching & analyzing our: natural gas and water consumption, reclaimed adhesive process, recycled waste & addition of roof skylights.

Our Success and Advantages:

  • SDF paper strapping products have passed the 3rd party review and our Greener Package Scorecard will soon be viewable on the Greener Package Database website.

  • Our tested Industrial Paper Strap has proven its value as a more sustainable alternative to plastic strapping, due to raw material base of paper (sustainable natural resource) compared to polypropylene (non-renewable petroleum base). Non-Renewable raw score supports 58% improvement over plastic strapping, as calculated by the Walmart Sustainable Packaging Scorecard Software.

  • SDF’s paper strapping is fully recyclable in the majority of municipal recycling facilities in the U.S., in established streams with  corrugate and mixed paper. This is an improvement in Recovery raw score of over 50% compared to plastic strapping.

  • Product line is manufactured with raw paper fiber from 100% Forestry Certified suppliers (CSA & SFI).

  • The manufacture of paper strapping products also provides a 44% reduction in Greenhouse Gas Emission raw score versus plastic strapping.

  • SDF Strapping, Inc. was privileged to exhibit our Industrial Strap at Walmart’s 2010 Sustainable Packaging Expo.

Our Contribution to the 7 R's of Packaging

  • Remove: SDF Strapping, Inc. has provided a more sustainable paper-based alternative to replace plastic strapping and film wrap in secondary packaging applications.

  • Reduce: Our Industrial Paper Strap primarily replaces existing plastic strapping, but may reduce amount of strapping used simply by reevaluating performance requirements.

  • Reuse: SDF is currently researching post-consumer raw material options that will not adversely affect performance requirements.

  • Renew (able): Our strapping products are made with paper-based raw materials that are 100% Sustainable Forestry Certified.

  • Recycle (able): Our patented paper strapping products are fully recyclable in the majority of municipal recycling facilities in the U.S. along with corrugate and mixed paper.

  • Revenue: SDF paper strapping is a more sustainable solution to eliminate plastic strapping and film wrap, with comparative cost and performance. Savings also achieved by non-use of plastic strapping recycling equipment and plastic sorting labor stream.

Our Commitment to Community

  • SDF Strapping is dedicated to promoting educational opportunities through our "Preserve Our Future Scholarship Fund" which currently provides college tuition aid to area students.

  • Our company also enjoys supporting community sports through sponsoring recreational teams as well as our local school athletics.

  • We support the Brillion High School music program by providing funding for musical instruments.

  • SDF recently experienced great joy in providing aid to Hosanna Ministries, which operates orphanage/mission in Haiti to help with earthquake disaster relief.

  • SDF Strapping is a member of the Brillion Chamber of Commerce, Brillion Optimists and sponsor of The Brillion Nature Center.
